Home / Throw-aways to Keepsakes / How we create keepsakes from throwaways!

Our process starts by sorting through the “trash”.  We collect our wood from a variety of sources including packing crates and pallets, home remodels, timber mill castaways, beach salvages and most importantly, other shops’ off-cuts and throw aways.  We take great pride in not letting things go to waste around our shop!

Next we begin the slow process of sorting, dismantling and de-nailing all of the wood that comes into the shop.  Each piece must be completely stripped of all of it’s nails and screws before it can be sent through the planers for refinishing.

All of the nails go to the recycling center!

Once the wood has been separated and de-nailed we then run them through a planer to strip off old paint, dirt, etc.  It is only after this process that we can really see the true figure and beauty of the wood.  This also helps us to determine what the wood will be most useful as.  Some goes on to be a table leg, another a strip in one of our custom cutting boards.

All of the sawdust and woodchips that we generate go to local gardens to be used as compost or filler for flower beds.

We carefully select each piece of wood for your custom piece to insure that your handcrafted piece will be strong, beautiful and unique.

So many to choose from.

Now comes the fun part!  We hand craft your unique piece with pride and care.  Each piece that we build is crafted in the traditional way without the use of metal fasteners.  We use traditional mortise and tenon joinery to hold it all together.

Once the piece has been built and sanded we select the appropriate finish.  All of our glues and finishes are non-toxic and 100% kid and food safe!
